Frederick L Schmoll, III

Obituary

Frederick L. Schmoll, 78, of Harbor Springs, died February 15, 2020 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

Fred was born on January 23, 1942, the son of Frederick Schmoll, II and Virginia (Olson) Ward. He was raised in Detroit and lived most of his life there, attending undergraduate and eventually earning his Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University.

In 1966, he married Beverly (McClintock) Schmoll and together raised their daughter, Stephanie.

Fred was extremely well rounded. He was exceptionally smart and enjoyed various activities. He was happiest when he was downhill skiing and loved being a Mountain Host at Boyne Highlands Resort. In recent summers he would be out on his motorcycle or in his garden. He had a green thumb and was especially talented at caring for plants and orchids. Fred worked as a Park Ranger at the Petoskey State Park the past few summer seasons, because he genuinely enjoyed being outside and meeting new people. He learned how to play the guitar and always loved the company of his favorite dog, Tshaka.

Recently, Fred was celebrated by the State Bar Association for his fifty years of practicing Law (1970-2020).

Fred is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Schmoll of Grand Rapids; her mother, Beverly Schmoll of Ann Arbor; his brother, Alex (Hilda) Schmoll of Canton; step-brother, Bob Ward of Cheboygan; and by his niece and nephew, Heidi and Jon Schmoll.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Frederick Schmoll, II; Virginia and Edwin Ward; and step-brother, Gerald Ward.

A memorial service will take place in Fenton, Michigan, at a later date.

Friends and family wishing to make a charitable donation in Fred's memory are asked to please consider the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society.

Fred was a good and wonderful person!  We remained friends from RHS days until his death, still exchanging notes on Christmas cards all through the years until he passed away. He will be greatly missed.
